Daniele Tascini, author/co-author of games like Teotihuacan: City of Gods ou The Voyages of Marco Polo, was our most recent guest for our interview with the usual 5 questions we ask board game designers. Why and how did you start creating board games? From making sand tracks for plastic balls on the beach or making rules for combat squads when playing with friends, it was a natural tendency for me inventing structured games. When I was a kid I was fascinating by the chessboard and those shaped pieces over it, and I really wanted someone teaching me how to play since I was very young. Risk and Monopoly were a standard I loved, but I was always searching for something new, and kept inventing my own games each time I had a chance. I realized maybe too late that it could be a real job, but I'm not complaining for what I'm achieving now. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? My opinion is that the game IS its mechanism. When you have a working mechanism you have a game, and when this mechanism is enjoyable, you will probably have a good game, because the rest you build around it, is just profession, technic and experience. The Theme? The theme is important. It could be more or less important depending on the kind of game. For sure it can be very helpful to build up the game around your mechanism. It will inspire you, it can be used to find nice sub-mechanism needed in the game. And it will help adding elements to the games to add depth and so on. Starting a game from a Theme is a false statement, when you say ‘I will make a game on Star Wars’, you said absolutely nothing. You just procrastinate the process of thinking about the mechanism. When you say I make two asymmetric sets of starships each one driven by a bunch of cards that tell you how you can move them, and you will build your deck drawing cards during the game… now you have a game (I just invented a possible game at random). Now you can have your Star Wars ships… but if you want to make an ancient Romans naval battle, you can either do that! The true reality is: A mechanism without a theme is still a game, a theme without a mechanism is.. just a theme. This statement cannot be argued. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? My favorite game is alwasys the last game I'm working on. When you make a new game you spend hours in thinking, developing, trying, changing... that means you really like what you are doing, so you have the feeling you are doing your best job. Of course in the end it's not always better then your previous games, but that's what you try to achieve. But from a different point of view, my favorite game is still the first. Definitely the Tzolkin core mechanism is the most brilliant thing I came with. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? The hardest task for me was... cutting the carboard gears in the Tzolkin proto….LOL Probably Marco Polo took me the longest developing time, but the most difficult task so far is the Tabannusi Automa I worked on in the last months. The challenge is develop a sort of AI to make an automa that plays (almost) like a real player and not its own game with different rules. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? As I said in the first answer I've always been into boardgaming, before I even realized that. But for sure the approach to modern board games came from Settlers of Catan and Puerto Rico.

Roberto Fraga (fragames.com), author of games as different as Captain Sonar or Spinderella (Formigas na Teia, in it's Portuguese version), was our most recent guest for our interview with the usual 5 questions we ask board game designers. Why and how did you start creating board games? Agora, tenho ambas as nacionalidades, francesa e espanhola. I was born in Spain and my parents emigrated to France in 1961 to find work there (When I was 1 year old). So now, I have both nationalities, French and Spanish. I’m game designer since I was 14 years old. All during my life I had 12 different jobs and the game design was a hobby since 1974, which was increasing and increasing slowly, year after year. I started to design games when I was 14 years old (so, in 1974) because it was a kind of obsession (it’s difficult to explain it). As I was a great fan of science fiction books and passioned by the Napoleonic wars I started designing very complex wargames about these themes. During my life all the jobs I have done have influenced my type of creations, and also all the travels, the meetings with friends all around the world, strange situations, the ideas are everywhere and you just need to open your eyes, to have imagination and to be patient and perseverant! When I met my wife for the first time, I was designing complex wargames, she was interested in games but more on family and party games, so I have decided to create easier and original games to play with her. After that, when I had my two daughters, I have created more children games because at first the objective was to play with my children. But finally, I like the fun in games, and I like to design really original games where you live a real experience. The most important in this category is Captain Sonar, of course! I don’t like at all to take an idea from an already existing game, to change it to do another game. I’m always trying to create new things… for me that’s the only sense of CREATION! We have only one life, so we have to do incredible things! In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Depends of the time of game, each story of creation is different. For example, for my strategy game Easter Island, I was fascinated by this mysterious island in the pacific and I was determined to create a game with this theme. For Princess Jing, the idea came from looking at a video clip of Michael Jackson ("Do you remember the time"). For Dancing Eggs, I had started buying plastic eggs because of the idea that came from looking at a magician giving eggs to children, and the eggs felt down… But the most original story of creation is about Doctor Panic. In December 2007, I was working as captain of a coastguard boat in France. We were sailing in the channel sea looking for a smuggler sailing boat. When we reached it, I broke my leg jumping on it. After that my colleagues had to carry me to the nearest coastal hospital. When I arrived at the operating block at the hospital, I had suddenly the idea to create a party and cooperative game about a surgery operation at the hospital and I asked the anesthetist to give me a paper and a pen to write my idea because I was afraid to forget the idea while he put me to sleep! After the operation on my broken leg, I was awakened in my hospital bedroom and I discovered the paper with my idea on my nightstand. So, I started to work on the idea of Doctor Panic. during my recovery. And the game was published by REPOS PROD! Finally, I have found positive things in a very negative event. The ideas are everywhere, and each game has it's creation story! Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? River Dragons, because it was the first one, I have published, in 2001, and because I have really great memories testing it with my young daughters, explaining it many times on game festivals, and always with a lot of success. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Captain Sonar, with my friend Yohan LEMONNIER, we have spent 2 years to design it. It was really difficult because our objectives were really high and we were feeling the future incredible potential of the game, but we had a wonderful motivation during these 2 years. It was a kind of great adventure to do it and the result is fantastic! The objective was to create a game where you are living an incredible adventure in a submarine, and that’s happened every time your play. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? I had different steps in my game designer career. River Dragons has suddenly given to me the opportunity to have more visibility as game designer. With Dancing Eggs and Trötofant I have arrived in the crazy game designer category (And that’s Ok for me!). With Captain Sonar, I have attracted a different public which was more gamer.
James Ernest (www.crabfragmentlabs.com) is the author of Lords of Vegas and Kill Doctor Lucky, among others, and accepted the invitation we addressed to board game designers to answer our usual 5 questions. Why and how did you start creating board games? I've been playing and making games since I was very young. My first game was "Cow," a two-player game for long drives, where players score points for passing fields of cows. My first formal design project was a chess variant called Tishai, which I created in high school, and which I later published through Cheapass Games. I grew up playing traditional family games like Yahtzee, poker, and cutthroat pitch. Inventing new ones just seemed like a natural thing to do. I like the atmosphere of a gaming table, the chance to interact with family and friends with some kind of structure. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? I've been designing games for 45 years, and in that time I've been inspired by stories and by mechanics. But there are many other sources for inspiration: player experience, demographics, marketing methods, graphic design, available materials, history, jokes. I don't really buy into the "theme versus mechanics" debate any more. The more important question might be "what first makes me want to play a game" and that's something that's personal to every player, and different for every game. This is the core of the game, the part that inspires the creator to create, and inspires the player to play, although often the designer and the player might not agree on what it is! Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? No momento, a resposta é Button Men. At the moment, the answer is Button Men. This game came together very quickly, yet has a lot of variety and sticking power. I started with the simple goal of making different sizes of dice equally valuable but for different reasons, and ended up with a tight little combat game with surprisingly deep strategy. Button Men is a game I will always be happy to play. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Diceland took the longest, and went through more variations and dead-ends. It's a cross between a miniatures game and a dexterity game, where players use large paper dice to do battle on a tabletop. I like the game, but I could never get it to catch on. It appeals to people who like both strategy and dexterity, and are willing to mix them together. Developing the game required creating original mechanics, as well as engineering a cardstock die that could be assembled without glue and would roll perfectly fair. The game went through many versions and several pitches to other publishers before I settled on the final form and published it myself. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? A maior influência será Magic: the Gathering. The biggest influence must be Magic: the Gathering. I became a freelancer for Wizards of the Coast almost immediately after Magic was released, and I learned a lot about design from how Richard Garfield and his team developed that game. So it wasn't just the game, but the people and the business around Magic that taught me about the world of board games.
Daniel Skjold Pedersen is the author of Copenhagen, Deep Blue and Shaky Manor (a.k.a. Panic Mansion), among others, and accepted the invitation we addressed to board game designers to answer our usual 5 questions. Why and how did you start creating board games? Tough question. I have a playful mind and felt this urge to create and work on meaningful projects (to me) that was not entirely fulfilled in my old jobs. Making games has given me all of that in spades. I first started making games in 2012 or 2013 when I was introduced to a small core of dedicated community of designers here in Copenhagen where I still live. Since then the design community has grown a lot, and it is all very exciting to have been a part of since the early days. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? I’d rather answer core experience and product. Core experience because regardless of the theme or mechanics this is where a game has to deliver for me to keep giving it attention. Both as a prototype I am testing and as a published game worth playing again and again. When designing games I first and foremost need to identify and expand on the core experience and then carve out the rest of the game from that starting point. Product because I design games for an audience of more than one, and I have plenty of ideas to work on so only the best games and products survive the purge when we prioritize where to spend our time. Not that theme and mechanics are unimportant. At best they work together and support each other well like in Deep Blue where you have this larger treasure hunt going on above the sea, and then when you dive at a wreck site you dig your hand down into a bag and pull gems out of it. In my mind at least it just gels and makes perfect sense. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? E poderia continuar... - Gold Fever, because it was the first game I signed with a publisher back in 2014. - 13 Days, because it was the first game to be released in 2016. - Frogriders, because it was the first true family-style game I made, a type of game I have come back to often over the last 5 years. - A Tale of Pirates, because it was a bear to design with a campaign of 10 unique games in the box. - Panic Mansion, because it came from a spark of inspiration and all of a sudden it was nominated for Kinderspiel des Jahres in Germany in 2018. - Deep Blue, because it was the game that allowed me to work with Days of Wonder which has always been a dream. - Bloom Town, because it is the first game we have designed and produced entirely ourselves under our very own Sidekick Games studio. - Copenhagen, because it is my home town, and it has picked up game of the year awards and nominations in Denmark, Sweden and Finland. And I could go on... Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Bloom Town, no doubt, but that may be cheating the question because as designer and publisher we have managed the entire chain of events from early prototyping to production and logistics, having a booth at Spiel in Essen and everything in-between. If I only look at design and development effort it would have been A Tale of Pirates until recently, but over the last 18 months we have spent hours and hours of work on Heat (WIP title), a racing game inspired by the early days of Formula One. Last year we cycled through I don’t know how many different ways to recreate turns, and most recently we have been testing 70-80 different upgrade cards you can pick from when building your car, and 50-60 unique event cards that may bring new challenges in single races and in full grand prix seasons. And then we are also building a competitive AI opponent and 4 different tracks and much more. I am really looking forward to being able to share this game with all of you in the autumn of 2020. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? I cannot think of a single game that has been the most crucial. I remember playing a lot of mass market games as a child, games like Guess Who? and Mastermind, and loving the social interaction and competitive nature. When coming back to the hobby I fell in love with games like Twilight Struggle and Imperial, though regretfully I rarely have the time to play longer games today. More recently the Pandemic Legacy series has brought me hours of fun.
Bernd Eisenstein, author of games like Peloponnes, Alea Iacta Est or PAX, is our guest to answer the already usual series of 5 questions. Why and how did you start creating board games? My first creations were just variations of Risk and a bit later counter war games with tons of rules, only for me and 2 friends – that was around 30 years ago. Seriously I started in 2000 with my first game, that was tested and had written rules. With my second one a year later I won a game designers competition called “Hippodice”. The game was published in 2003 on the Abacus label under the name “Maya”. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? That differs… sometimes I have a theme that I wanna use and think about mechanics then, but mostly I start with one, or more mechanics and try to use my favourite theme (ancient times) for that. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? I really love Pandoria for it’s smoothness and deep gameplay with just a few rules, but I still love Peloponnes, which is my long time seller for it’s short playtime, also with many players and for it’s variety. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? I had most problems with Panthalos. It is a bigger game that needed many tests until it was ready to be released. Originally I wanted to release it in 2013, but I saw it was not ready that year, so I brought Palmyra forward, which was close to a release and the artist Klemens Franz had some free time to realise this for me, then in 2014 Panthalos saw the light of day and it was really worth it. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? In my childhood it was Risk, because I said that Monopoly is a game for babies, while Risk is a game for real men! My entry into the different german games was Catan and Manhattan back in 1994/95.
Today we publish another interview with a board game designer. This time it was answered by Benjamin Schwer, author of Hadara, Crown of Emara or Yeti, among other recognized games. Why and how did you start creating board games? When I was a child, I created some variations on games, but never a completely new game of my own. During my studies I played a lot and always had criticism of games. At some point my wife said that I shouldn't always just say what I don't like about a game, but that I should just create a game myself, the way I like it. I saw this as an interesting challenge and so I started to create board games. One of the best decisions in my life - thanks to my wife. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Most of the time I create games from the mechanics. Sometimes I also play around with game material and get ideas for children's games. Furthermore I also make games from the theme. The theme changes during the development or during the editing by a publisher. This could be one reason why players often don't notice whether a game was originally created from the theme or the mechanism. My game Yeti is rather an exception, I created it from the theme and the publisher left it that way. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? That's really a very difficult question. The game I'm most passionate about is always the game (or games) I'm working on. Furthermore, I don't have an absolute favorite, because for me it always depends on the group I play a game with. I had and have a lot of fun playing my Hadara with completely different types and groups of players. On the other hand I enjoy playing Fridos with my children. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? I don't know which of my games was the hardest to create, because the question of what's hard is difficult for me to answer. Some prototypes are still in a very long development process and that's often hard, but sometimes a prototype that doesn't work so well gives me a very good idea for a completely different game that works well. Always a kind of "hard work", but in a very pleasant way, is the work with the editor Ralph Bruhn. He is very persistent when it comes to improving a game further. That's absolutely great, of course, and exactly what I want to do as well. On the other hand, it is of course sometimes really hard work. With my Crown of Emara, for example, it was a lot of work to get all the small values to fit together so that everything works perfectly. Our current project, which isn't quite final yet, was also a lot of work, but - like the other joint projects - also a very pleasant and beautiful job. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Probably not ONE game, but I know that the games El Grande and Carcassonne made a big impression on me.
We returned to interviews with board game designers and this time with Kane Klenko, author of Fuse, Dead Men Tell No Tales and Covert, among others. Why and how did you start creating board games? I've always been creative, so when I got in to board games, I naturally had ideas swirling around in my head. I didn't do anything with them until I was laid off from work in 2010. I figured since I had some free time, I'd start working on a game. It worked out, and I never looked back. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? It's usually theme, but it's different for every game. A lot of times I'll have a theme or a mechanic in my head, and much later on I'll have an idea and combine it with something I've been thinking about for a long time. Like with Fuse, I thought bomb defusal was a good game theme, but never did anything with it. Months or maybe years later I had an idea for a real-time cooperative dice draft, and I immediately paired it with the bomb defusal idea and it was a great fit. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? That's tough. I've always said Covert is my favorite, but Flip Ships might be the one I'm most proud of. It's so different than anything out there and accomplishes exactly what I wanted it to. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Provavelmente Dead Men Tell No Tales. Probably Dead Men Tell No Tales. It was the second game I ever tried to design, and it had a lot going on in it. Getting everything balanced and to the right level of excitement took awhile. It was originally called Backdraft and was a fire-fighting cooperative game, but right when I finished the design Flash Point was announced, so I had to retheme the game and then redesign around the new theme. The game ended up better for it, but it was a lot of work. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Posso indicar alguns. I'll give a few. Torres was the first modern board game that I ever played, so that's the one that opened my eyes to what was out there. Games like Amun-Re and Ra from Reiner Knizia got me even more hooked. Pandemic is probably the game that influenced my cooperative design style the most.
Adam Kwapiński, author of games like Lords of Hellas, InBetween and Nemesis, is our guest in another interview with board game designers. Why and how did you start creating board games? Ohhh ... Ohhh... Long time ago in a galaxy far far a way... Truly, this is a hard one but let's try. First game I designed by myself when I was 8 or something. Before that I made two or three games with the help of my father or/and older sister. But the first time that I try to do it by myself was around 1993. I did it because I wanted to translate a computer game to a board game. When I finished the game I just wanted more of it. It was Desert Strike, a game where you were piloting Apache helicopter and it was really good (but also quite short - it has only 4 levels as I remember). So I made a solo board game about it. It was horrible and I mostly forgot anything about it (probably my brain trying to protect me from remembering that) but it was quite a complicated game with lots of different mechanics (at that time I was playing tabletop RPG so I used a couple of different dices in this game, I remember that D8 was the main one because of directions). This was the first time. Since then there were plenty of different ideas - lots of them were inspired by computer games. After that I was totally in RPG (I also try to create my own RPG game but this is a totally different story) and had less time for board games. I came back into them in early 2000. Back to playing and very fast back to creating again. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Hard to tell. Sometimes one way sometimes another. But I try not to separate this two things. When I'm thinking about a game I try to think of it as a whole and not two parts. This is because I love when mechanics fits the theme and it's not important what type of game it is. It's so important that even if I find some great mechanism I have problems with creating a totally abstract game around it and I try to find a theme (even if the publisher changes it later) because this way it's much easier to work for me. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? Ouuu... Sorry, cannot say. They are listening ;p But probably the one that I haven't designed yet. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Hmmm ... Hmmm... Besides couple of games I created very fast (like In Between or Ark of Animals - both of them were created in a couple of hours and there was very little to change in them after first test) each game gave me some difficult times when I was creating them. I think that in each game there was one or more problems that I couldn't solv for a very long time. Some of them were typical for my designs - for example, lots of my games are very slow (in matter of dynamic of play) in the first prototype. And this kind of problems are quite easy to solve because I know them well. I just treat them as a stage of my designing process. But sometimes there are harder problems - like in Nemesis, for example, with the Contamination cards before the scanner concept was introduced (it came from two guys from Rebel that were working with me on that game and I'm very thankful to them for that). This wasn't simple gimmick in Nemesis - it solved very real problems in deck management. But if I may say what game as a whole was the hardest to design it will be Outcast Heroes. And it was hard because in the concept the game is competitive but players play the same side and try to make missions together (but some players get more points from that). And it is very hard to make a game like this. You don't want players counting everything and optimizing the result and every move either you don't want high luck factor because they feel then that their decisions were pointless. If you add to this quite short deadlines and some components limitations it's start to be very hard task to design that game. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Foram Agricola, Through the Ages, Game of Thrones e Pitch Car. There are lots of games that were very important for me. When I got back into the board games there were 4 games that stole my heart for looooong hours. It was Agricola, Through the Ages, Game of Thrones and Pitch Car. These were the most important games for me when I returned to board games after the break. But if you ask about the first game that was very important to me it will be Star Trader. I played it the first time when I was six or seven and it was veeeeery hard to understand the rulebook. I had played Talisman before that and a couple of other easy games but this was totally different. It was a economic game with supply/demand mechanic (still very interesting in my opinion), black market, dynamic prizes for goods on different planets and so on. And I think that when I played it the first time it was for me like: "okeeeey, so you say we can do that kind of games too".
In our series of interviews with board game designers, today we publish the answers of Vladimír Suchý, creator of Underwater Cities, Pulsar 2849 and League of Six, among others. Why and how did you start creating board games? After I got to know boardgames and it started to be my hobby and I was playing with my friends often, the thought of designing my own game came to me automatically. Relating to the fact, players enjoyed very much playing my first prototypes, I continued in designing. About 2 or 3 years later my first real game, League of Six, was published. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? While designing my games, first of all, there are found some base mechanisms usually, which I connect to the theme in few days. But there are also exceptions as the Last Will. In this game the theme is the most important and very big financial legacy was also the idea really at the beginning of the designing process. The answer for this question was also the part of the article Designer’s Diary on BGG: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/82054/designer-diary-mechanisms-or-theme-underwater-citi De todos os teus jogos, qual é o teu preferido? Porquê? Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? With all my games I spent some time while designing them, some joys and sorrows…They are like my children, I love all of them. As the best designing moments I remember for example the process of improving the drafting system in Pulsar, system of choosing actions in Shipyard or the theme of Last Will… Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? The longest time I spent with designing: Pulsar 2849. I had the base drafting dice mechanism and all other things in it were changing all the time…..the third version of the game was published finally. My other games didn’t take me such a lot of "designing time". Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? When I am thinking about "new strategical" boardgames (not the abstract ones), I would like to mention Settlers of Catan.
Another interview with a board game designer, this time to Sébastien Pauchon, author of Jamaica, Jaipur and The River, among others. Why and how did you start creating board games? My very first "ideas" were in High School, where we spent some time with friends toying with the idea of an expanded Risk and a detailed Quiz on Super-Heroes. Nothing came out of it, but we did work a bit on those ideas. Then in 1998 a friend who wanted some help in designing games contacted me. We met for about a year, but except for half a decent abstract, we didn’t do much better than most rookies who re-invent Chess and Monopoly and that was that. But that first year did plant seeds… In 2002 I learned about so called modern games as I randomly purchased Carcassonne, stamped with the Spiel des Jahres 2001 logo. That was the dive for me as Internet (still relatively new back then) provided me with hundreds (thousands?) of references, older and new games, modern classics like Tikal, Catan, Samurai, Tigris & Euphrates, and so on. So I played like mad between 2002 and 2004 to "catch-up" on all this great games, and that re-kindled the designing process; Imagine a box with your name on it… In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Except for a couple of contract games we created with a fixed theme (Helvetiq with the Swiss political system at its core, Kimaloé for a Swiss NGO dealing with kids’Rights and Krobs for the Lausanne Microbiology Institute) most of my ideas are mechanics. I really am not much of a Geographer or Historian or RPG player, so the story is almost never in the foreground for me. It’s therefore mostly mechanics, that might sprout while doodling, while playing another game, while mis-reading a rule or maybe a picture (like it happened for Metropolys). Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? I can’t really say. All have their specific history and journey. Maybe Jamaica, as it was the very first complex (production-wise) board game we published with Malcolm and GameWorks and we really did put a lot of work in all the details. So it is a game I co-created (with Malcolm Braff and Bruno Cathala) but it’s probably the whole publishing process that makes it that special to me. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? I dont’ think games are that hard to create (once you’ve had the starting idea, that is), so none. But, if you look at my ludography, that is probably due to the fact that I have never created a real heavy-weight or complicated game. All range from light to mid-weight, so I can’t really say they were "hard" to create. The only one that might qualify is T.I.M.E Stories, but that is a special case as I was publisher on that game. It was originally planned to be released as a GameWorks game so I did most of the early development of the game’s core mechanics as well as the first scenarios. It then slid to the SpaceCowboys when the studio was launched and my job on the game gradually diminished and eventually ended as the other took over the burden. It was a hard game to develop for several reasons: - Manuel’s (Rozoy, the designer) idea was rather ground-breaking at the time, we didn’t have much experience in that genre to rely on; - His idea was already advanced but far from being playable so there was a ton of development to be made; - The prototype needed to be very well made to see if the players could actually play by themselves. Since the cards have many hidden elements and red herrings, relevant and useless informations, you can’t just have blanks cards with some text and sometimes a card with a precise element. All cards need to be on the same level of visual perception. So hours and hours of google images and photoshop and layout, to see if the game concept actually could work. - And once that was established (the game could work), the game rules stil kept morphing to accommodate the following scenarios until we had a system both stable and as open as possible. - The tests were a nightmare, as you can’t use a team of three or four players more than once, because of the nature of the game. It it was an endless cycle of test with a new group, make substantial changes, make a new 150-card prototype, test with a new group, etc. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? As a player, Condottiere was my first modern game followed by Carcassonne. They both were real eye-opener! Also the artwork remains very fresh and amazing to this day. |
