The artist Lars-Arne "Maura" Kalusky, responsible for the art of games like Power Grid, Fearsome Floors or Half-Pint Heroes, among others, also answered our usual questions. Why and how did you start illustrating board games? I worked with Friedemann Friese in the new media company of his brother. He needed somebody for the illustrations and since I've made comics in my youth, I started to make the graphic-design for his games (from 1999 till 2012). Where do you usually get the inspiration for a game illustration? What is your usual creative process like? Mostly it's in my head. You say "motocycle race" and I have a picture in my head. But I also use Google for inspiration. Almost every theme has one million game versions, so why not look at how other people transform the theme into a game? That doesn`t mean to steal ideas, it`s just for inspiration. Costumas jogar os jogos que ilustras? Enquanto jogador, qual é o teu preferido? Do you usually play the games you illustrate? As a player, which one is your favorite? Claro. Of course. It`s really important, that you play the game before you make the design. You have to know which informations are important and how big they have to be, so that everybody can notice them (if they should notice them). And how the feeling of the game is. Some games have the feeling of race games, but don´t have a racing theme. So I try to make the design a little bit in this direction. The question of my favourite game is a little bit difficult. I can just say, which game I like from the illustration, not from the gameplay. There are three games, I still like from the artwork: Half-Pint Heroes, Funny Friends and Fearsome Floors. And I think, the newest one will be cool, too. Which game was the hardest for you to illustrate? Why? The hardest game was Funny Friends. About 200 different illustrations. Every card should be a joke, not a simple drawing. At the beginning of the project, I made 8-10 card drawings a day, but after a week or so, I just managed to make 1-2. A little burn out in the middle of the project. Also the boards for Power Grid were hard in the past. The working Photoshop file had about the size of 1 GB. On 2004 till 2008 that meant, that to save or open the file it would take 30 minutes! So you would think twice after 1,5 hours of work, if it was time to save the file and make a break. Not so nice, if you have a deadline. What advice could you give to someone that wants to be a board game illustrator? If you want to be a professional board game illustrator, you should to be clear that this is a business, not a hobby. Of fun-business, but a business. All of them want to earn money, and so should you. Publishers often tell you, that you are too expensive and that other will make it for less money. Mostly that isn't true. If you started with illustrating, use a time managing tool (I use timelog, but you can also use a stop watch), so you know how much time you need for your work. It's important. As I started to use the tool, I compared the time I used for the drawings. My feeling said it was just one hour, but in reallity it was 3,5 hours. Other tips? Nope, but I have to say, that designing boardgames are just a small part of my job. Mostly I make "normal" graphic-design and animation movies.

Today we publish another interview with a board game designer. This time it was answered by Benjamin Schwer, author of Hadara, Crown of Emara or Yeti, among other recognized games. Why and how did you start creating board games? When I was a child, I created some variations on games, but never a completely new game of my own. During my studies I played a lot and always had criticism of games. At some point my wife said that I shouldn't always just say what I don't like about a game, but that I should just create a game myself, the way I like it. I saw this as an interesting challenge and so I started to create board games. One of the best decisions in my life - thanks to my wife. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Most of the time I create games from the mechanics. Sometimes I also play around with game material and get ideas for children's games. Furthermore I also make games from the theme. The theme changes during the development or during the editing by a publisher. This could be one reason why players often don't notice whether a game was originally created from the theme or the mechanism. My game Yeti is rather an exception, I created it from the theme and the publisher left it that way. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? That's really a very difficult question. The game I'm most passionate about is always the game (or games) I'm working on. Furthermore, I don't have an absolute favorite, because for me it always depends on the group I play a game with. I had and have a lot of fun playing my Hadara with completely different types and groups of players. On the other hand I enjoy playing Fridos with my children. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? I don't know which of my games was the hardest to create, because the question of what's hard is difficult for me to answer. Some prototypes are still in a very long development process and that's often hard, but sometimes a prototype that doesn't work so well gives me a very good idea for a completely different game that works well. Always a kind of "hard work", but in a very pleasant way, is the work with the editor Ralph Bruhn. He is very persistent when it comes to improving a game further. That's absolutely great, of course, and exactly what I want to do as well. On the other hand, it is of course sometimes really hard work. With my Crown of Emara, for example, it was a lot of work to get all the small values to fit together so that everything works perfectly. Our current project, which isn't quite final yet, was also a lot of work, but - like the other joint projects - also a very pleasant and beautiful job. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Probably not ONE game, but I know that the games El Grande and Carcassonne made a big impression on me.
We returned to interviews with board game designers and this time with Kane Klenko, author of Fuse, Dead Men Tell No Tales and Covert, among others. Why and how did you start creating board games? I've always been creative, so when I got in to board games, I naturally had ideas swirling around in my head. I didn't do anything with them until I was laid off from work in 2010. I figured since I had some free time, I'd start working on a game. It worked out, and I never looked back. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? It's usually theme, but it's different for every game. A lot of times I'll have a theme or a mechanic in my head, and much later on I'll have an idea and combine it with something I've been thinking about for a long time. Like with Fuse, I thought bomb defusal was a good game theme, but never did anything with it. Months or maybe years later I had an idea for a real-time cooperative dice draft, and I immediately paired it with the bomb defusal idea and it was a great fit. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? That's tough. I've always said Covert is my favorite, but Flip Ships might be the one I'm most proud of. It's so different than anything out there and accomplishes exactly what I wanted it to. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Provavelmente Dead Men Tell No Tales. Probably Dead Men Tell No Tales. It was the second game I ever tried to design, and it had a lot going on in it. Getting everything balanced and to the right level of excitement took awhile. It was originally called Backdraft and was a fire-fighting cooperative game, but right when I finished the design Flash Point was announced, so I had to retheme the game and then redesign around the new theme. The game ended up better for it, but it was a lot of work. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Posso indicar alguns. I'll give a few. Torres was the first modern board game that I ever played, so that's the one that opened my eyes to what was out there. Games like Amun-Re and Ra from Reiner Knizia got me even more hooked. Pandemic is probably the game that influenced my cooperative design style the most.
Konstantin Vohwinkel is the artist responsible for games like Vanuatu, La Stanza or Halloween, among others, and is our guest in another of our interviews. Why and how did you start illustrating board games? I started illustrating board games in 2013. In 2010 I studied communications design. Within the 3rd year, I started a course for digital illustration. After the 2nd lesson, I already knew that I was going to be an illustrator. Since finding work as an illustrator for video games was a difficult task (because I actually just started to work digital), I focused a little more on the board game field. My first job was to create a cover artwork for some expansion box for Quined Games. Year by year the jobs got bigger and the payment better. Where do you usually get the inspiration for a game illustration? What is your usual creative process like? The Settlers and The merchants". In general, my inspiration comes simply from everywhere I'm going, what I'm watching and what I'm dreaming at night. Basicly, for every board game illustrating job, the costumers have already a style direction that they wanna go to. Mostly you'll be provided with examples, such as: "We'd like to see something like the artwork you did for Vanuatu" or "We're aming for something that goes in the direction of The Settlers and The merchants". With this information and my own inspiration as mentioned, I usaly have a picture in mind, quite quickly. Costumas jogar os jogos que ilustras? Enquanto jogador, qual é o teu preferido? Do you usually play the games you illustrate? As a player, which one is your favorite? I do play them. I think Vanuatu (Quined Games) is still one of my favorites. In my collection exist also few games I haven't played yet. Which game was the hardest for you to illustrate? Why? Hard to illustrated were my last bigger productions, Halloween and La Stanza (both Quined Games again). Halloween was difficult because it was reviewed and pulled in too many different directions at the same time and the cool 80's styled horror film theme was drowned in a more childish looking family game. Still, I was happy with the result and the overall stlye! I can't say the same about La Stanza. The work on this one took so much time, because the whole theme was changed 3 times (including the game board). It was a tiresome process because it had so many changes. I think the game itself is great. The artwork isn't one of my favorite styles. What advice could you give to someone that wants to be a board game illustrator? Pratica, pratica e pratica novamente! Practise, practise and practise again! Take any minute you can spare and work on your skills. Don't be scared! Believe in yourself, you can do it! If you're not sure if you are ready to start, ask other professionals what might be missing in your style. And of course, write to EVERYONE and share your portfolio with them. Usually you'll have an positive answer from somewhere you'll never would have expected it to come from.
Adam Kwapiński, author of games like Lords of Hellas, InBetween and Nemesis, is our guest in another interview with board game designers. Why and how did you start creating board games? Ohhh ... Ohhh... Long time ago in a galaxy far far a way... Truly, this is a hard one but let's try. First game I designed by myself when I was 8 or something. Before that I made two or three games with the help of my father or/and older sister. But the first time that I try to do it by myself was around 1993. I did it because I wanted to translate a computer game to a board game. When I finished the game I just wanted more of it. It was Desert Strike, a game where you were piloting Apache helicopter and it was really good (but also quite short - it has only 4 levels as I remember). So I made a solo board game about it. It was horrible and I mostly forgot anything about it (probably my brain trying to protect me from remembering that) but it was quite a complicated game with lots of different mechanics (at that time I was playing tabletop RPG so I used a couple of different dices in this game, I remember that D8 was the main one because of directions). This was the first time. Since then there were plenty of different ideas - lots of them were inspired by computer games. After that I was totally in RPG (I also try to create my own RPG game but this is a totally different story) and had less time for board games. I came back into them in early 2000. Back to playing and very fast back to creating again. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Hard to tell. Sometimes one way sometimes another. But I try not to separate this two things. When I'm thinking about a game I try to think of it as a whole and not two parts. This is because I love when mechanics fits the theme and it's not important what type of game it is. It's so important that even if I find some great mechanism I have problems with creating a totally abstract game around it and I try to find a theme (even if the publisher changes it later) because this way it's much easier to work for me. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? Ouuu... Sorry, cannot say. They are listening ;p But probably the one that I haven't designed yet. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? Hmmm ... Hmmm... Besides couple of games I created very fast (like In Between or Ark of Animals - both of them were created in a couple of hours and there was very little to change in them after first test) each game gave me some difficult times when I was creating them. I think that in each game there was one or more problems that I couldn't solv for a very long time. Some of them were typical for my designs - for example, lots of my games are very slow (in matter of dynamic of play) in the first prototype. And this kind of problems are quite easy to solve because I know them well. I just treat them as a stage of my designing process. But sometimes there are harder problems - like in Nemesis, for example, with the Contamination cards before the scanner concept was introduced (it came from two guys from Rebel that were working with me on that game and I'm very thankful to them for that). This wasn't simple gimmick in Nemesis - it solved very real problems in deck management. But if I may say what game as a whole was the hardest to design it will be Outcast Heroes. And it was hard because in the concept the game is competitive but players play the same side and try to make missions together (but some players get more points from that). And it is very hard to make a game like this. You don't want players counting everything and optimizing the result and every move either you don't want high luck factor because they feel then that their decisions were pointless. If you add to this quite short deadlines and some components limitations it's start to be very hard task to design that game. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Foram Agricola, Through the Ages, Game of Thrones e Pitch Car. There are lots of games that were very important for me. When I got back into the board games there were 4 games that stole my heart for looooong hours. It was Agricola, Through the Ages, Game of Thrones and Pitch Car. These were the most important games for me when I returned to board games after the break. But if you ask about the first game that was very important to me it will be Star Trader. I played it the first time when I was six or seven and it was veeeeery hard to understand the rulebook. I had played Talisman before that and a couple of other easy games but this was totally different. It was a economic game with supply/demand mechanic (still very interesting in my opinion), black market, dynamic prizes for goods on different planets and so on. And I think that when I played it the first time it was for me like: "okeeeey, so you say we can do that kind of games too". Regressamos às nossas entrevistas com ilustradores de jogos de tabuleiro e, desta vez, com Klemens Franz, responsável pela arte de jogos como Agricola, Le Havre e Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King, entre outros.
We return to our interviews with board game artists and, this time, with Klemens Franz, responsible for the illustrations of games like Agricola, Le Havre e Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King, among others. Why and how did you start illustrating board games? I started by illustrating my own prototypes. But I stumbled into the business when Hanno from Lookout asked me to do Agricola. Before that, Lookout had a contest for a game about Dragons. I submitted 2 dragons. One got picked and that's how I got in contact with the business. So a combination of luck and well, luck. Where do you usually get the inspiration for a game illustration? What is your usual creative process like? Depende sempre do projecto. This always depends on the project. Sometimes the publisher has a quite clear vision of how the game should look like ... and sometimes this is more open. I play a lot of games myself and I always ask myself how I would like to have a game look like. If there already is a theme I do a basic research on the topic. Then, in most cases, I start working on one component that is in my opinion central to the game. Everything else evolves around that component. Costumas jogar os jogos que ilustras? Enquanto jogador, qual é o teu preferido? Do you usually play the games you illustrate? As a player, which one is your favorite? Orléans, Agricola, Clans of Caledonia, Port Royal. Yes, if possible. I need a feeling for the usability of the game. How do the components need to be arranged? How do players need to hold the cards? What should be made of wood - and what can be made out of cardboard? It's quite a complex thing if you think about it but if you play a lot of other games (and the prototype) you get a feeling for that. As a player I really like complex Euros and simple but clever games. Orléans, Agricola, Clans of Caledonia, Port Royal. I'm really thankful that I had the chance to work on so many games that I like to play! Which game was the hardest for you to illustrate? Why? In most cases illustrating isn't the hard part. Sometimes it is hard to find the common ground with the designer, editor, publisher. Of course there are things that I simply cannot do in technical terms. Le Havre was quite exhausing because the whole iconography took so long. It was a hard process. But not in a negative way. What advice could you give to someone that wants to be a board game illustrator? Play games and get a feeling for the things happening on the table. And then you need to find an open door and a segment that you would like to work in. Probably collaborate with a new publisher. Be patient. Be willing to work a lot.
In our series of interviews with board game designers, today we publish the answers of Vladimír Suchý, creator of Underwater Cities, Pulsar 2849 and League of Six, among others. Why and how did you start creating board games? After I got to know boardgames and it started to be my hobby and I was playing with my friends often, the thought of designing my own game came to me automatically. Relating to the fact, players enjoyed very much playing my first prototypes, I continued in designing. About 2 or 3 years later my first real game, League of Six, was published. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? While designing my games, first of all, there are found some base mechanisms usually, which I connect to the theme in few days. But there are also exceptions as the Last Will. In this game the theme is the most important and very big financial legacy was also the idea really at the beginning of the designing process. The answer for this question was also the part of the article Designer’s Diary on BGG: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/82054/designer-diary-mechanisms-or-theme-underwater-citi De todos os teus jogos, qual é o teu preferido? Porquê? Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? With all my games I spent some time while designing them, some joys and sorrows…They are like my children, I love all of them. As the best designing moments I remember for example the process of improving the drafting system in Pulsar, system of choosing actions in Shipyard or the theme of Last Will… Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? The longest time I spent with designing: Pulsar 2849. I had the base drafting dice mechanism and all other things in it were changing all the time…..the third version of the game was published finally. My other games didn’t take me such a lot of "designing time". Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? When I am thinking about "new strategical" boardgames (not the abstract ones), I would like to mention Settlers of Catan.
Another interview with a board game designer, this time to Sébastien Pauchon, author of Jamaica, Jaipur and The River, among others. Why and how did you start creating board games? My very first "ideas" were in High School, where we spent some time with friends toying with the idea of an expanded Risk and a detailed Quiz on Super-Heroes. Nothing came out of it, but we did work a bit on those ideas. Then in 1998 a friend who wanted some help in designing games contacted me. We met for about a year, but except for half a decent abstract, we didn’t do much better than most rookies who re-invent Chess and Monopoly and that was that. But that first year did plant seeds… In 2002 I learned about so called modern games as I randomly purchased Carcassonne, stamped with the Spiel des Jahres 2001 logo. That was the dive for me as Internet (still relatively new back then) provided me with hundreds (thousands?) of references, older and new games, modern classics like Tikal, Catan, Samurai, Tigris & Euphrates, and so on. So I played like mad between 2002 and 2004 to "catch-up" on all this great games, and that re-kindled the designing process; Imagine a box with your name on it… In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? Except for a couple of contract games we created with a fixed theme (Helvetiq with the Swiss political system at its core, Kimaloé for a Swiss NGO dealing with kids’Rights and Krobs for the Lausanne Microbiology Institute) most of my ideas are mechanics. I really am not much of a Geographer or Historian or RPG player, so the story is almost never in the foreground for me. It’s therefore mostly mechanics, that might sprout while doodling, while playing another game, while mis-reading a rule or maybe a picture (like it happened for Metropolys). Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? I can’t really say. All have their specific history and journey. Maybe Jamaica, as it was the very first complex (production-wise) board game we published with Malcolm and GameWorks and we really did put a lot of work in all the details. So it is a game I co-created (with Malcolm Braff and Bruno Cathala) but it’s probably the whole publishing process that makes it that special to me. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? I dont’ think games are that hard to create (once you’ve had the starting idea, that is), so none. But, if you look at my ludography, that is probably due to the fact that I have never created a real heavy-weight or complicated game. All range from light to mid-weight, so I can’t really say they were "hard" to create. The only one that might qualify is T.I.M.E Stories, but that is a special case as I was publisher on that game. It was originally planned to be released as a GameWorks game so I did most of the early development of the game’s core mechanics as well as the first scenarios. It then slid to the SpaceCowboys when the studio was launched and my job on the game gradually diminished and eventually ended as the other took over the burden. It was a hard game to develop for several reasons: - Manuel’s (Rozoy, the designer) idea was rather ground-breaking at the time, we didn’t have much experience in that genre to rely on; - His idea was already advanced but far from being playable so there was a ton of development to be made; - The prototype needed to be very well made to see if the players could actually play by themselves. Since the cards have many hidden elements and red herrings, relevant and useless informations, you can’t just have blanks cards with some text and sometimes a card with a precise element. All cards need to be on the same level of visual perception. So hours and hours of google images and photoshop and layout, to see if the game concept actually could work. - And once that was established (the game could work), the game rules stil kept morphing to accommodate the following scenarios until we had a system both stable and as open as possible. - The tests were a nightmare, as you can’t use a team of three or four players more than once, because of the nature of the game. It it was an endless cycle of test with a new group, make substantial changes, make a new 150-card prototype, test with a new group, etc. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? As a player, Condottiere was my first modern game followed by Carcassonne. They both were real eye-opener! As a designer, probably Yspahan, because it was my first finished game. As a prototype it probably helped me win the Göttingen Rookie Designer award, and as a first published game (with Ystari) it was nominated for the Spiel. That was a very nice start. As a publisher, Jamaica was released shortly after and got us quite some attention at the time, as we were among the first small (French-speaking) companies back then to match the big ones in terms of quality of production. Also the artwork remains very fresh and amazing to this day.
A quoi ressemble ton processus créatif?
Donald X. Vaccarino, author of Dominion, who is considered the reference for deck-building games, also gave us the pleasure of answering our questions in an interesting interview about his creative process. Why and how did you start creating board games? I made a few as a kid, not really thinking about it. Some were just modifications to other games - we wanted to play a 2-player game but there were three of us. Some were my version of another game - I could fix this up, I thought. The few that weren't based on anything started with flavor and weren't very good. In 1994 I started playing Magic: The Gathering, and I loved the variety, how you had all these different experiences from game to game. I got really interested in trying to make games that actually worked, and that had lots of variety, could become different games. I ramped up my work on games quickly, and made lots of games in the late 90s, running through ideas. Some of these games have been published, going back to Monster Factory from 1995. In your creative process, which comes first: the theme or the mechanics? I think of it as three pieces: theme, mechanics, data. The theme is the flavor; the mechanics are what you do, the data is the information stored about the game. For example Puerto Rico and San Juan have the same theme and core mechanic but much different data. Mostly I have started with mechanics. A few games started with data, including Dominion. I have started with theme too though. Of all your games, which one is your favorite? Why? Dominion! Dominion! For the public it was my first game. For me, in 2006, it was the culmination of a decade of making games. Parts of it are just things I automatically did, after finding out about them over the course of that decade. One thing I especially like about Dominion is the way it hides complexity. If you have a game where everyone plays a card a turn with an ability on it, after 5 turns in a 4-player game there are 20 abilities on the table; it's hard to make sure everything happens that's supposed to. In Dominion your abilities are hidden away in your deck, you only see a few at once. This lets you get a more complex board position while still being able to deal with it. Which game was the hardest for you to create? Why? I don't know that any of them have been "hard." With so many years spent on expansions, Dominion has been "time-consuming." But I had the basic game in a weekend. For me the hardest part usually is committing to the game, deciding that it will work well enough to make the cards or boards or chits. I think about the ideas, convince myself they won't work well enough, see if I have a fix, all without trying anything, just thinking about it and filling a file with notes. I have learned over the years to fight this by trying stuff in the lamest way possible, to do things like try a mechanical premise using cards from another game, so I can actually know something about the idea while still not having put all the work into it yet. A couple of my games had much different versions. Temporum had a deck-building version first; Nefarious started as a much more complex game. So they were more work in that they were like making two games. Kingdom Builder has an idea from another game, with that game coming from another game; and initially it was going to be deck-building (a couple games tried to be Dominion spin-offs and then turned into something else), but I never made that version, I just thought about it a bunch and then got rid of that part. Is there one game that has been crucial to your entry into the world of board games? Sim, Magic: The Gathering. Yes, Magic: The Gathering. It not only got me more interested in making games, it also got me friends who played German board games. In the 90s that was where it was at; a new game would come out in Germany, and there would be some pages of translation someone made so you could play it with the German components. |
